The ‘vulvo-vaginal rejuvenation’ achieved by the treatment may also help women postpartum and pre-menopausal women with mild incontinence and laxity of the vagina.
Vaginal atrophy is a common condition, especially among women going through the menopause or who are postmenopausal. During the perimenopausal phase of a woman’s life, the production of the hormone oestrogen by the ovaries declines. The vulvo-vaginal tract is very sensitive to this decline in oestrogen, with a number of consequences that may have a direct impact on the quality of life of a woman:
- weakness and laxity of the vaginal mucosa
- dryness
- itching and burning
- pain during sexual intercourse (dyspareunia)
These symptoms are often ignored by patients or are considered to be an inevitable effect of the natural ageing process. Many women are uncertain about pharmacological treatments such as hormone replacement therapy or intravaginal oestrogen or may not be able to use such therapies.
MonaLisa Touch®, an Italian-built laser device recently approved by the FDA, is the first laser-assisted treatment to fight vaginal atrophy safely and effectively.
Thanks to the gentle action of an innovative fractional CO2 laser, the vaginal tissue can be rejuvenated naturally and effectively by means of therapeutic and not purely aesthetic treatment. When the pre-menopausal structure is restored, the vaginal mucosa benefits from the functionality it had lost due to age, thereby recovering:
- hydration
- trophism
- tone
- sensitivity
SYMPTOM IMPROVEMENT (%) AFTER 3 MONALISA TOUCH® TREATMENTS IN MENOPAUSE PATIENTS
Laxity: 54.22%
Dryness 74.16%
Irritation 65.39%
Dyspareunia (pain with intercourse) 63.53%

MonaLisa Touch ® is the only procedure proven not only by clinical results but also by detailed ultrastructural and histological studies. Scientific publications of the results demonstrate the effective tissue regeneration achieved thanks to the unique combination of the wavelength of the CO2 laser, the structure of the D-Pulse and adequate emission power.
During menopause, the mucosa presents a particular condition with metabolically quiescent fibrocytes as opposed to fibroblasts, unable to actively produce collagen, hyaluronic acid and other molecules needed for an adequate glycoprotein ground matrix. This can result in dry mucosa because it is dehydrated and less well nourished meaning it is fragile and more prone to infections.
The purpose of treating vaginal atrophy is to promote and recover pre-menopausal metabolic activity by means of a new synthesis not only of collagen, but also of hyaluronic acid, glycosaminoglycans and proteoglycans. This helps to regain hydrated mucosa that in turn restores a proper trophic supply to the tissues, thus reinstating all the functions typical of younger healthy tissue.
Treatment for vaginal laxity
Laxity of the vagina and introitus can occur from vaginal delivery or be part of the natural ageing process resulting in a potential impact on sexual function. The effective action of the laser can be used to treat vaginal relaxation due to a loss of tone of the vaginal mucosa. When inserted in the vagina, the laser acts directly on the mucosa of the walls, tightening, reshaping, toning and stimulating tissue and regenerating collagen.
Treatment for mild urinary incontinence
Recent studies show that MonaLisa Touch® can be effective in treating mild urinary incontinence postpartum or in the menopause. The stimulation of the vaginal tissue, re-establishes the proper functionality of the urogenital involved structures. This allows restoration of correct urinary continence, with a dramatic positive improvement in the quality of life, both physically and psychologically.
The MonaLisa Touch® procedure
The procedure is made up of three, three-minute laser sessions, each four to six weeks apart. It is a relatively painless procedure with no anaesthesia or painkillers required. The procedure is fast, simple and safe.
